Like so many of the Greek gods, Hades also liked to have his fun sometimes. He wasn’t all doom and gloom at all times, sitting there in his Underworld throne. No sir, he would abduct fair maidens on occasions, and he could even show mercy when people pleaded him for it. You’re basically taken from the height of Olympus to the depth of the Underworld, and Hades replaces Zeus as your companion in this game. The base game is all about accumulating Multiplier Orbs that come with values up to 500x each, and the total Tumble win is boosted accordingly. The same goes on in the bonus round, but then the multiplier never resets. The 5,000x win cap is the same, and the top-tier 95.5 % RTP is still a bit below the industry average.

You can play with the Ante Bet active if you’re willing to pay 25 % extra per spin, and this doubles your bonus round chances. The premium symbols pay between 12 and 50 x your stake for 12 to 30 matching symbols anywhere in view, and all winning symbols are removed via the Tumble mechanic. This makes room for new and/or existing symbols to drop down to fill the gaps, and the winning streak will last until you hit a non-winning tumble.

There are no Wild symbols in this game, but Hades (see on the right) will sometimes add Multiplier Symbols to the grid. These are winged gemstone orbs of 4 different colors, and they come with random multiplier values up to x500. All values from the multiplier orbs in the same tumble sequence are added together, and the sum total will boost your total tumble sequence win.

You need 4, 5, or 6 Hades Scatters on the same base game spin, or in the same tumble sequence, to trigger the Bonus Round. This gives you an upfront payout of 3x, 5x, or 100x your stake, and you win 15 free spins no matter the amount of triggering scatters.

Multiplier symbols are progressively added to the global win multiplier for as long as the feature lasts, and the global win multiplier does not reset until the feature is over. You win +5 extra spins whenever you land 3+ scatters in view, and there is no cap on the number of extra spins, nor on the win multiplier.

On a final note, non-UK players, and anyone living in an eligible jurisdiction, can take advantage of the Bonus Buy feature. This will cost you 100x the stake, and it guarantees at least 3 scatters on the spin that follows. The RTP does not change much, but the top-tier RTP is 95.51 % when you purchase the feature.

Review Summary

It cannot be denied that Gates of Hades is a straight-up clone of Pragmatic Play’s highly successful Gates of Olympus. The visual experience is pretty similar as well, but a bit “darker” since you’re taken down into the Underworld instead of being elevated to the heights of the godly kingdom. The ruler of the underworld, Hades, has replaced Zeus on the right-hand side, but everything else plays out exactly as in the original game.

It therefore boils down to a matter of visual preference, or what kind of mood you’re in on any given day. The tumble sequences are snappy and satisfying all the way, and additive multiplier symbols up to x500 can lead to solid payouts in all stages of the game. This is not least the case when the multiplier only keeps building in the bonus round, but the max win is still capped at 5,000x your stake. We would’ve preferred if Pragmatic had added something new to the mix, but occasional reskin jobs like this are par for the course in this industry.
