Greentube’s original physical slot was so successful that it spawned several online versions back in 2013. These are mostly forgotten these days, so Inspired Gaming decided to breath new life into the franchise with a modernized Megaways release. Not too modernized though, as the nostalgic retro style survived the transformation intact.

One thing to keep in mind from the get-go, is the fact that you need to play with a certain strategy to maximize your theoretical returns (see FAQ at the bottom of the review for details). Fans of the original game can look forward to everything being bigger and bolder, as well as a few random base game features that are brand new. The overall slapstick vibe is the same, and it certainly sticks out from run-of-the-mill Megaways releases.

The bulldog wild can slide in on the top horizontal reel on base game spins, and it steps in for all regular pay symbols to help you form winning combos. The wild can land on the regular reels in the bonus round. Winning symbols are removed due to the Cascading Wins feature, and new symbols fill the gaps. This goes on as long as you keep winning.

At random times the police siren goes off, and the lamp up in the top right corner flashes blue or red. This awards 1 of 2 features. The Blue light feature adds a random number of Mystery symbols to the reels, and these turn into a randomly chosen matching pay symbol.

The Red light however, triggers the Reed Reels feature. You will then see the robber appear below the reels on the left-hand side, and he moves one step to the right per spin if the crossing light on the right-hand side turns green.

The number of megaways increases per spin, and the feature ends if you reach the maximum number. It also ends if you land a win greater than 5x your stake, or trigger a feature. The spins are not free, and the aim is to get to the far right-hand side before the cop chases the robber down. If the robber reaches the safe zone, you’re guaranteed at least 3 scatters on the next spin.

Any win above 5x triggers the free spins gamble feature. You can choose to collect your win, or gamble to win more. The third option is to gamble to win free spins. The gamble is a classic green/red segment wheel, and landing on green means that you win.

You trigger the Bonus Choice when you land 3+ scatters, and this gives you 2 options as follows:

The regular Bonus Round option gives you 8 free spins for 3 scatters, plus 2 extra spins per extra scatter up to 78 spins at the most. The progressive multiplier increases by +1 per cascading win, and Bonzo the bulldog might leave his dog house to become a walking wild on the top reel. He moves 1 position to the left per spin, and landing a bulldog wild directly below him turns the whole reel wild.

The other option is The Chase Bonus. You will be taken to a board game filled with cash prizes, and you’ll roll a red dice to move Bert the Robber forward, collecting prizes as you go. The cop is asleep, and the snooze count starts at 3 (with +1 per extra triggering scatter above 3). This gives the robber a head start of 3 moves, before the cop starts chasing via the blue dice.

You can land on a 2x multiplier also, doubling the value of your loot. When the cop finally makes his arrest, Bert is lined up in an ID parade. If Bert is singled out, you get your winnings. If not, the chase bonus game starts again with increased board prizes. The multiplier can go as high as 5x this way.

Review Summary

Cops ‘n’ Robbers Megaways is undoubtedly a solid upgrade from the Greentube classic, and fans of the original will hardly be disappointed. The slapstick humor and retro visual style is carried over perfectly, and plenty of fun extra features have been included. The biggest drawback here is the RTP, as you need to make the right choices to maximize your theoretical returns (see FAQ section below).

Still, the highest possible payout percentage is 95.50 %, which is well below the 96 % “standard level” these days. We also don’t like the fact that the max win potential is undisclosed, but we do know that the win cap is £250,000. Whether or not every stake can reach that cap is hard to tell, but probably unlikely. Overall, the game feels like somewhat of a pet project from Inspired, and it’s too bad they’ve allowed simple things like RTP and potential to hold it back.
