Northern Lights Gaming’s less than memorable All Star Knockout was followed up by an Ultra Gamble version not long after, and we would have preferred if the whole thing was knocked off the table at the drawing board stage, instead of now being made into a trilogy. 5 Star Knockout comes with even less impressive visuals, as it lacks the colorful fruit symbols from the predecessors, but it’s otherwise a very similar game.

Everything revolves around the Star Scatter Collect System, although Win Spin streak respins can grace the otherwise tedious base game at random times. Filling a pay symbol-specific star meter awards the bonus round with that symbol removed, and the aim is to remove as many symbols as possible during the feature, which also prolongs the round with extra spins. The base game single spin max win is only 100x your stake, but 4,500x is possible in the bonus round.

The 4 premium number symbols (3 different colored 7s and 5 as the top-tier symbol) pays 2, 3, 4 and 5 x your stake for 5 of a kind wins. The Star Symbol is the scatter, and you can land up to 5 anywhere in the base game. Star scatters are collected in symbol-specific Award Boards below the grid, and you need 5 collected stars to fill any given symbol’s star meter. The collected stars are saved between spins per bet level.

A Bonus Stars feature may trigger when the Award Boards are empty, giving you a random amount of stars that are added to randomly chosen symbol star meters. There is also a randomly triggered Win Spin feature, in which you keep getting respins as long as you keep winning.

Review Summary

The glossy and highly generic theme did very little to pique our curiosity, and we had a feeling up front that this wasn’t gonna be the most memorable experience of the year. Microgaming partner, Northern Lights Gaming, has already tried this concept 2 times before, and we hope 5 Star Knockout can be chalked up as the final effort. The base game offers 100x top-up wins at best outside of the Win Spin feature, but this game is mostly about the Star Scatter Collection system.

It comes across as a bit strange though, as we see no reason why you would want the top-tier symbols removed. The idea is, of course, to remove enough symbols to increase your full screen win chances, although this is hardly an easy achievement with only 5 initial free spins. The best case scenario is having all but the top-tier ‘5’ symbol removed from the get-go, combined with an x5 multiplier, as this guarantees 500x your stake payouts per free spin.
