In Dragons Clusterbuster they’ve combined both elements into a visually pleasing 9x9 grid slot experience, and it comes with a somewhat innovative trademarked Clusterbuster™ feature literally at the center of everything that goes on.

We say ‘somewhat’ since Red Tiger has tested the waters with something similar in Thor's Lightning, albeit without any trademark in that release. The Clusterbuster is first used to unlock all 3 Hatchling modifiers, and these trigger at random times after that. Once that is achieved, the 3x3 center block is key to triggering the bonus round, which comes with more frequent Hatchling modifier triggers.

You win by landing 5 to 20+ matching symbols in the same cluster anywhere on the grid, and the 4 premium symbols pay 12 to 50 x your stake for 20+ matching symbols in a cluster. The golden Wild steps in for all regular pay symbols to help complete winning clusters, but the wild does not hold any value of its own.

Each win triggers the Chain Reaction mechanic, and this feature removes the winning symbols from the grid. New and/or existing symbols will then drop down to fill the gaps, and the Chain Reactions go on as long as you keep winning. This mechanic is the key to all other features in Dragons Clusterbuster.

The 3x3 dragon’s egg block located at the center of the grid is called the Clusterbuster, and the Clusterbuster egg is surrounded by 8 outer blocker tiles. You remove the blocker tiles by landing adjacent cluster wins, and the current Clusterbuster egg hatches when all 8 blocker tiles are removed.

A dragon eye is then unlocked above the reels, of which there are 3 in total, and this indicates that the corresponding Hatchling modifier is now available. The blue dragon’s eye opens first, followed by green and purple. The unlocked Hatchling modifier triggers on the following spin, and all unlocked Hatchling features can trigger at random times from that point forward:

• Blue Hatchling - removes all low-value symbols from the grid, and only premium symbols will drop on the cascade that follows.
• Green Hatchling - adds up to 20 wilds randomly placed on the grid.
• Purple Hatchling - adds a Lightning Multiplier to up to 13 randomly chosen symbols, and the multiplier values vary randomly between x2 and x100. Multiplier values multiply if more than one is part of a win, up to x100 per cluster at best.

The Bonus Round becomes available in the Clusterbuster once all 3 eggs have been unlocked, and you will then see ‘Free Spins’ spelled out on the 3x3 center block. You win 10 free spins when all 8 blocker tiles are stripped from the Clusterbuster block. The Clusterbuster block is removed during the bonus round, and you can expect more frequent random Hatchling modifiers. You cannot retrigger the bonus round, nor win extra spins.

Red Tiger has seen some success with their Dragon’s Fire series, and Dragons Clusterbuster should appeal to fans of that fantasy-themed range, at least visually. The biggest point of controversy is the whole dragon’s eye unlocking feature, as some players will find it lame that they have to waste time and money until the game finally fires on all cylinders. Others will probably enjoy this element of progression, but it does seem a tad unnecessary in this game to be honest.

A more familiar concept would be to remove Clusterbuster blocker tiles to trigger the Hatchling modifiers, which eventually leads to the bonus round. However, all 3 trigger randomly once unlocked, but they do appear quite frequently when you finally get to the bonus round. The 5,250x potential is far better than what’s on offer in the somewhat similar Thor’s Lightning, and cluster pays grid slot fans will most likely find plenty to enjoy in Dragons Clusterbuster, at least once everything is unlocked.
