Mancala is seemingly on a spiritual trip these days, as Portal Master comes right after the very strange Starwins. This one has more of an anime vibe to it than the previous release, and it revolves around the energy sphere collection feature. This developer is trying very hard to be unique and stick out, but it doesn’t necessarily translate into quality games.

With a low risk/reward profile, Portal Master is clearly meant to appeal to a certain crowd. Despite being able to use stored up energy spheres to transform symbols, this release doesn’t feel very innovative. In the end, it’s about expanding wilds that land on more reels during the bonus round, but there might be a small niche market for a game like this, who knows.

The blonde, busty portal master herself is the wild symbol in this game, and she lands on the middle reel only. Whenever she appears, the wild expands to cover the full reel, and it steps in for all regular pay symbols to help you form winning combos. You’re also granted an energy sphere whenever the wild lands (more about that below).

The Energy Spheres look like crystals, and you can save up to 6 of them in the Collection Stone on the left-hand side. You can use Energy Spheres to transform scatters into regular symbols, or you can save them to trade up for more powerful features. There are 3 Energy Sphere levels, as follows:

• Low-level Spheres - occupy 3 slots in the Collection Stone, and can be used to transform scatters into a random regular symbol.
• Mid-level Spheres - occupy 2 slots in the Collection Stone, and can only be acquired by trading up all 3 low-level spheres. You can use these to transform not only the scatter into a random symbol, but a whole 5-of-a-kind line. This guarantees a win.
• High-level Spheres - can be acquired by trading up the 2 mid-level spheres, and it occupies only 1 slot in the Stone. This sphere awards a random number of free spins.

The crystal scatters pay 30x your stake for 5 on a payline, but they do not trigger the bonus round. They are merely there to be transformed when players use the Sphere feature, and the only way to get to the Bonus Round is to trade up the 2 mid-level spheres for the high-level sphere.

The Free Spins feature starts automatically when the trade is done, and you get 10, 15, 20 or 25 spins randomly assigned. You can land extra expanding wilds on reels 2 and 4 during the feature, but no wilds award energy spheres in the bonus round. You will get +1 extra spin per wild you land though.

The almost 4-minute highlights video starts when we trade up for the high-level stone, and this awarded us with 15 free spins. We got the occasional expanding wild here and there, prolonging the bonus round, and you can see how it played out by hitting the play button.

Review Summary

It’s not so often you see a slot where you get to choose how to use collected items. Mancala Gaming is an experimental developer for sure, but we are less sure how much of a success this feature will be. It seems to us that there is hardly any reason to not save up to trade for the bonus round, as a random 5OAK win is seldom worth all that much anyway, not to speak of the individual symbol transformation.

So, basically, you have an innovative way to trigger the free spins feature, but hardly anything else is innovative. You get the expanding wild on reel 3 in the base game, and it lands on the 3 middle reels in the bonus round. Hardly revolutionary.
