This is not the first time EvoPlay has taken us on a 3rd-person video game style 3D adventure, and we have a feeling it’s not the last time either. They have ditched the shoot ‘em up element in Ethan Grand: Mayan Diaries, however, and instead the game is focused on the choice of paths as you explore the ruins of an ancient Mayan city in the South American jungle.

Dangers lurk everywhere, however, and choosing the correct path means the difference between life and death for your explorer hero and avatar, Ethan Grand. You can cash out after each choice, and the prizes increase along a 5 milestone timeline that leads to the bonus game. The max win is £30,720, and fans of Lara Croft and similar video games should love what’s on offer here.

You start by choosing your bet size (£0.1 to £500), and hit “play”. You will then choose which way to move out of 3 options, or you can use the random button to let the game decide for you. Each choice amounts to a “spin” if this was a regular slot, and the outcome is that either your character, Ethan, dies, or he manages to move across the hinders of the chosen route.

If Ethan reaches his destination alive and well, this amounts to 1 milestone on a timeline consisting of 5 milestones. Each milestone you reach increases your winnings, from 0.384x to 6.144x your stake. You can cash out at any milestone as you see fit, but you need to reach the 5th milestone in a single session without dying to trigger the Bonus Game.

As mentioned above, if you manage to guess the correct path 5 times in a row, you trigger the Bonus Game. You then need to make a decision up front. You can either take your current winnings, or you can stake it all in the bonus game. The bonus game is all about opening a chest to get to the treasure inside.

You’re basically placing a bet on whether or not Ethan will manage to open the chest. You have to open a lock that consists of 5 circles to win the bonus game, and the key can break at any time. This means that the bet is lost. You get 3 keys for the 5 circles, and they are turned one by one to see how it goes. This is done via the left and right arrow buttons, or via the random button.

Review Summary

Having tried similar RPG-style games in the ‘shoot-em up’ genre before, we have to say that we enjoyed this EvoPlay release far more. Ethan Grand: Mayan Diaries takes you on a Mayan ruins jungle adventure that’s filled with dangers, and it’s more fun to choose between different paths than simply shooting different critters non-stop. The stakes and tension increase per successful path choice, but you can cash out at any time.

It’s not as nerve-racking as those Busta games, however, since you can catch your breath between each choice. It’s fun to explore the 3D video game style environment, but it also gets a tad repetitive after a while. Having more than one type of bonus game seems like a good idea if there is a follow-up. That being said, Ethan Grand: Mayan Diaries is well worth checking out, not least if you want something that sticks out in a major way from regular slots.
